Staircase Terminology

• Pony Wall: Half wall.  Often found in townhomes.  The railing usually sits on top of wall.
• Riser: The vertical face of a stair step.
• Baluster: Closely spaced support for a railing.
• Newel: An end post that supports a handrail.
• Tread: The horizonal face of a stair step.
• Rake: The pitch of the staircase.
• Nosing: The point of the tread that extends beyond the riser.
• Balustrade: Railing with supporting balusters.
• Step: the combined tread and riser.
• Landing: Platform between flights of stairs.
